About Brandy Kirk, LPC(IL), LMHC-A(IN)

Hi there, and welcome, I’m so glad that you're here. Everyone has a different path that they walk in life. If you’ve been carrying invisible wounds for a long time, then you know that healing is not about “just getting over it”- it’s about feeling safe enough to explore your story, finding the language for what’s been an unspeakable burden, and building a life that is worth living for you. Experiencing trauma can shape how you see yourself and it can influence how safe you feel in the world. My work is dedicated to helping others overcome the challenges of trauma by empowering them to build their confidence, trust, and happiness.

In our work together, nothing is off-limits. You can bring your whole self, including your thoughts, feelings, and memories that you’ve never been able to share. I approach therapy by meeting you where you are and tailoring the therapeutic environment to meet your needs. Therapy with me is grounded in empathy, non-judgment, and human connection.

If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed by your own thoughts, or wondering if things can truly change- I want you to know that healing is possible. I will walk with you through the darkest and most tangled parts of your experience. You don't have to navigate this alone. If you would like to take the next step toward support, I'm here whenever you're ready.

Favorite Self-Care Activities Currently:

Going for long walks along the beach, painting in the sun, exploring new restaurants in Chicago, and diving deep into thriller TV shows and movies on rainy days, Additionally, I love traveling to new places and so far this year I have been to Cancun, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kenosha and have trips scheduled to explore the Upper Peninsula.

Books I am Currently Reading and Why:

Book 1: I'm Glad my Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

I have been wanting to read this since it came out. I finally started it three days ago and am almost finished with it already. This book depicts a realistic view of how eating disorders can control your life, your view of self, and your view of others. I find the book to be relatable in that I struggled with an eating disorder that led me to seek therapy and eventually, led me to becoming a psychotherapist. The book highlights the underlying feelings that happen when experiencing repeated abuse from the person that you trust and love more than anyone: your mother, and the processing that has to occur when you realize that this person was actually causing you harm throughout your life.

Book 2: The Whore of New York: A Confession by Liara Roux

This book is about a sex worker and political organizer that lives in New York City. Liara is part of the LGBTQIA+ community and has known it since they were young. The story depicts a young Liara and how they overcame religious trauma, physical, sexual, and narcissistic abuse in relationships, and how they came to the decision to become a sex worker. The story begins with a young Liara who experiences cluster headaches and what this could mean for her mental health and ends with an adult Liara who begins to seek out therapy for the experiences she's encountered throughout her life. I am almost finished with this book as well and it's a breath of fresh air for anyone who has ever felt misunderstood by others.

Book 3: I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

Before reading the book, I watched the movie first. I was extremely perplexed by the movie and the debate that was occurring about what the main character was struggling with so I just had to start the book. This book is a psychological thriller told by the girlfriend of a character named Jake. The girlfriend has only known Jake for a few weeks before Jake decides to take her to meet his family. During this time, the girlfriend consistently weighs the pros and cons about ending the relationship between her and Jake. That's all of the details I can give regarding what happens in the book. It's a great book so far and a warm welcome to a fictional read vs the non-fictional reads that I am currently reading.
